John —
Exactly one year ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out nearly 50 years of precedent by overturning Roe v. Wade and undermining the fundamental right to an abortion.
In the 12 months since Roe fell, we have seen rollbacks and outright abortion bans in state after state. These bans don’t just hurt those who wish to obtain an abortion, but also prevent pregnant people who may have serious health complications from receiving lifesaving medical care. And in some places like Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, Florida, and Missouri, doctors can actually face hefty fines or even jail time for providing an abortion.1
With so many different state laws, we know it can be hard to keep track, so we wanted to give you an updated state of play of where abortion rights stand across the country. But before we do, can you split a donation between abortion funds and pro-choice groups in states where abortion rights are under attack? Your support is especially critical to groups fighting on the front lines.

Information from the Guttmacher Institute as of June 20, 20232
Since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling that struck down Roe, 25 states have banned or restricted access to abortion.3 This has forced those seeking an abortion to cross state lines, often at great risk and expense, to obtain medical care. And even in states where abortion is banned except in the case of a life threatening condition, because these laws are so vague and confusingly worded, many medical professionals have denied care even when the mother’s life was at risk.4
But it hasn’t all been doom and gloom. Over the past year, at least 11 states have actually strengthened abortion rights including Illinois, Colorado, and Maryland.5
And since Roe fell, we have seen time and time again that voters overwhelmingly support the right to a safe and legal abortion.
-
Voters in California, Michigan, and Vermont voted to enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution over the past year,6
-
And in Kentucky, voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to ban abortion.
-
Earlier this year, voters in Wisconsin elected a pro-choice justice to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in hopes that she will rule against an abortion ban that has been on the books since before the Civil War.
-
And just this week, in a Democratic primary, voters in Virginia overwhelmingly voted out the last anti-choice Democrat in the state legislature and nominated WFP Champion Lashrecse Aird to replace him.
But even in states where abortion isn’t outright banned, we can’t get complacent. Anti-choice extremists are working around the clock to whittle away our rights. Like in Ohio, where Republicans are trying to make it harder to pass an amendment to the state constitution ahead of a critical vote in November where voters can decide to enshrine the right to an abortion into the state constitution.7 And in Virginia, where abortion rights are very much at risk if Republicans are able to win a trifecta in the General Election in November. That’s why we must remain vigilant, and continue to fight back against any attempts to rollback abortion rights.
Right-wing forces may have thought the fight was over when Roe fell. But we’re just getting started. Wherever abortion rights come under attack, we’re prepared to fight back. That’s why we’re working overtime to elect pro-choice candidates up-and-down the ballot and pass ballot initiatives that will protect abortion rights into law. But this will continue to be an ongoing issue for years to come, and we’ll need you to stick with us in this fight, John.
Today, on the one-year anniversary of the fall of Roe, will you split a donation between abortion funds and pro-choice groups who are fighting on the front-lines to provide critical care to those in need?
