John,
One year ago today the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping
away abortion rights for people across the country in the Dobbs v. Jackson
Women’s Health decision.
Some of you may know about my personal experience with our reproductive
health care system. I am fortunate to live in a state where pregnant
people’s right to make choices about their own bodies is protected. The
support network around me helped me to exercise my own choice, rather than
imposing someone else’s views on me.
But for so many people across the country, because of this Supreme Court
decision and a frightening far-right movement based on hatred and vitriol,
this constitutional right has been revoked. To this day, right-wing
Republicans are determined to pass more extreme abortion bans, all while
simultaneously working to undermine voting rights to further silence the
people.
Abortion is currently banned in 14 states and Republicans are fighting to
further ban access to safe and effective methods of abortion like the
FDA-approved medicine, mifepristone. Not only do these policies rip away a
person's ability to make potentially life-saving decisions for themselves,
it pushes people towards unsafe alternative options. No person should ever
be put in that position.
Now more than ever, we need legislation that reaffirms everyone has a
constitutional and fundamental right to the life-saving care they not only
need, but also deserve.
This fight needs every ounce of grassroots support that we can muster.
From the local level to the federal level, we need to be bold and
determined in our collective fight for reproductive justice. [ [link removed] ]Can we
