No man behind a bench gets the last word about our bodily autonomy
John,
One year ago, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturned the precedent set by Roe v. Wade – eliminating the federal constitutional right to abortion care nationwide.
In the weeks and months that followed, our worst fears came true: Republican-dominated state legislatures quickly introduced and passed laws to ban abortion in 13 states across the country, leaving tens of millions of Americans without access to essential abortion-related care.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe was dehumanizing, dangerous, and damaging. Just ask this woman in Oklahoma who was told to “ bleed out ” in a parking lot because miscarriage care could no longer be legally offered to patients under new state laws restricting abortion care.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: We all know and love someone who has had an abortion – regardless of your political affiliation, religion, occupation, race, or zip code. Those who have had abortions are not nameless, faceless people. They are our friends, neighbors, partners, colleagues, and family members. They are us – and an attack on the dignity, respect, and rights of one person is an attack on all of us.
In the years and months to come, I believe Republicans will continue to push their agenda of banning abortion nationwide. But hear this: No man behind a bench gets the last word about our bodily autonomy, nor does a failed, twice-impeached-now-indicted president.
My Democratic colleagues and I will not stop until the protections guaranteed to every American by Roe are restored as the law of the land. With the vast majority of Americans standing with us, we will not lose.
Onward,
Becca Balint
