Friend, as we mark the one-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade being overturned, I wanted to share this email that I sent the day the decision dropped.

I can still remember the fear, the grief and the anger that filled that day. There was a sense of palpable dread as we realized that our country had taken a devastating step backward – and we knew exactly what would come next.

Today, in many states, politicians behind closed doors get to make medical decisions – not the women who are facing these incredibly personal decisions.

The GOP's far-right agenda is directly undermining a woman's ability to access the health care that she needs – health care that could very well be lifesaving. We must do everything that we can to restore a woman’s right to make essential health care decisions with her doctor, free from the interference of politicians and judges.

I've shared my family's abortion story with you a few times – and to mark this anniversary, I sat down with NBC News to share it once again. We cannot let the GOP drown out these crucial stories and the very real stakes in this fight. So today, I'm asking you to reaffirm your commitment to restoring women's rights by making a $5 donation to defend our Senate majority and elect pro-choice leaders. Please, will you make a donation today?

Thank you for your partnership in this fight. Together, I know that we will win.

With hope,

Gary

Subject: re: today's ruling

Friend, today, our country took a dangerous step backward, undoing generations of progress. The Supreme Court utterly failed to defend an essential right supported by nearly 50 years of precedent – a right that women and families have relied on.

As a father and a husband, I'm terrified. As an American, I'm furious. And as a U.S. senator and chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, I'm more determined than ever before.

This was a painful loss, but we cannot give up. It's up to us to fight back – to resist the right-wing efforts to push our country backward, to defend reproductive rights and the right for women to make their own health care decisions. We've all got a role to play in this, and as chair of the DSCC, I have to make sure that we both defend and EXPAND our Senate majority. This is the only way to ensure that we can stop the GOP's right-wing agenda.

That's why I've launched a $50,000 Rapid Response DSCC Chair Grassroots Goal. I'm counting on your support here, so please, can you rush $5 before our midnight deadline? We're up against powerful forces, and we'll only win if we all stand together.

I've seen firsthand how dangerous it is to let politics come between a patient and a doctor. When my first wife and I lost a baby that we dearly wanted, we were heartbroken. Being denied a medically necessary abortion created so much additional trauma and pain during what was already a time of intense mental anguish.

But here's the thing, friend: Our story is just one of so many across this country. And after today's ruling, millions of Americans will have their bodily autonomy and this deeply personal decision taken away from them.

I refuse to sit by and watch this happen. If you're with me, can I count on your donation today so that we can expand our majority and finally pass legislation to guarantee the right to abortion under federal law?

I know this is a difficult day. Thank you for continuing to fight with me.

With warmth and gratitude,

Gary Peters
