John,
FIRST: Justice Clarence Thomas refused to recuse himself from cases concerning the 2020 election or January 6 insurrection, even though his wife privately pressured Arizona state lawmakers to overturn the 2020 presidential election result and attended the January 6 rally that preceded the attack on the Capitol.
THEN: ProPublica reported that Justice Clarence Thomas has been accepting luxury vacations — along with tuition payments for his grandnephew's boarding school — from a billionaire Republican donor for over 20 years and refusing to disclose them.
NOW: We just learned that Justice Samuel Alito was taken on a luxury fishing trip by hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer. Alito didn't disclose the trip OR recuse himself when cases dealing with Singer's business came before SCOTUS.
And get this, John: Paul Singer gave AIPAC $1 million just a few days before our primary last May — funds that undoubtedly helped AIPAC spend millions of dollars attacking Summer.
It's no wonder we have a current lack of trust in our judicial system. Summer is taking action to reform our corrupt court, but taking a position like this puts her directly in line for Republican attacks.
Summer knows that corrupt justices must be held accountable. That's why she called for Justice Thomas' impeachment back in April. Check out what she had to say:
“The normalization of shamelessly corrupt, undemocratic behavior of Republican legislatures, governors, and judges at EVERY level is testing the limits of our democracy and judicial integrity like this country has never seen never before.
To allow Justice Thomas to be bought out with Illegally accepted luxury vacations and gifts is to make a kangaroo court out of the highest court in the land.
This CANNOT be about politics. There must be bipartisan action for accountability.
Our commitment to democracy and our judicial integrity MUST be bigger than any party's hunger for power."
Thank you,
Team Summer
