John,
Auto insurance discrimination keeps our residents in a cycle of poverty.
Non driving factors being used in calculating car insurance is just proxy to discriminate against communities like ours. One’s education level, zip code, marital status, and credit score determine your auto insurance rates. Yet, drivers in Black and working class neighborhoods regularly face higher auto insurance rates than others.
A University of Michigan Poverty Solutions study showed that someone with a drinking under the influence violation but had a higher credit score paid three times less than someone with a clean driving record but a lower credit score. That is absolutely ridiculous and shows that the auto insurance industry is discriminating and hiding behind these non-driving factors.
That’s why I’ve re-introduced the Prohibit Auto Insurance Discrimination Act (PAID Act), to continue the critical work of dismantling systemic racism and building a more equitable and just nation.
The PAID Act would ensure insurance companies only use driving related factors when determining car insurance rates and eligibility. Add your name as a grassroots co-sponsor now and fight back against the predatory and discriminatory practices of auto insurance companies.
The PAID Act would bar the use of the following when calculating insurance rates:
-
Education level
-
Employment status and occupation
-
Home ownership status or marital status
-
Credit score / consumer report
-
Gender
-
Zip code or adjacent zip codes
-
Census tract
-
Previous insurer information
This bill would also empower the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to enforce these prohibitions.
Become a grassroots co-sponsor of the PAID Act today to fight back against an insurance industry that targets our working class communities.
With you in this fight,
Rashida
