June 23, 2023

Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Wednesday was the first official day of summer. Summer break at our DC Public Schools has started and the Class of 2023 has graduated. On Monday, DPR camps begin and so does the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). Also on Monday, all outdoor pools will start their six-day summer schedule. Summer is here in Washington, DC!

I want to thank our teachers, principals, and school staff for another successful school year. Now, it is critical that we work together, as a community, to keep our young people safe and engaged throughout the summer.?We will have more than 14,000 teens and young adults earning and learning through MBSYEP. We will have thousands of kids and teens in DPR summer camps ? this year, DPR is offering 13,000 summer camp slots at over 60 locations. And at this time, families can still enroll children and teens in a variety of camps. To find openings and register for camp, visit?dprsummercamp.com.

Rocket Camp

This week, students at Raymond Recreation Center helped launch us into summer by demonstrating some of the rockets that campers use and make at the DPR Rocket Boost Camp.?

We had a fantastic school year, now let's work together to keep that momentum going into and through the summer!

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Celebrating Progress at Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health

cedar hill

On Thursday morning, Mayor Bowser, councilmembers, workers, heath care partners, and community members celebrated the topping out of Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health on the St. Elizabeths East campus. During the event, the Mayor, workers, and guests signed the final steel beam in the hospital's frame, marking a critical milestone in the project. Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health will be the first full-service hospital to open in DC in over 20 years.

Once completed in 2025, the hospital will be fully integrated with two new urgent care facilities, existing providers, and the George Washington University Hospital to establish a robust system of care for all District residents and in particular, communities East of the River. The $434.4 million full-service hospital will include 136-beds (with the ability to expand to 184 beds), a verified trauma center, adult and pediatric emergency departments, maternal health and delivery, an ambulatory pavilion for physician offices, clinics, a community space, a 500-car garage, and a helipad for emergency transports.?

If you missed the event, you can watch it HERE.?
