As the Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, I have the privilege of helping to oversee many landmarks in our nation's capital—including the Library of Congress! 

This week, I received a tour of the Jefferson Building, got updates on their ongoing improvement projects, heard directly from librarians and staff, and viewed documents from their unique collection showcasing the history of our community. The Library of Congress is one of the most fascinating buildings in Washington, and I hope everyone can one day visit this impressive piece of American history.

 Supporting Rochester's Business Economy 

It was a pleasure to welcome members of the New York State Business Council to Washington. I'm grateful for my longstanding partnership with this important organization, which helps to support businesses of all sizes across New York State. 

I look forward to our continued work together to strengthen the future of New York’s business economy and build a better future for everyone who calls our state home.

 An Update on This Year's Appropriations Process 

Earlier this month, the House Appropriations Committee began taking the next steps in our federal appropriations process. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve on this important committee and advocate for our community’s priorities throughout this process.

However, the House Republican majority continues to advance proposals that make drastic cuts to programs our families rely on.

On Thursday, the committee considered funding for Energy and Water Development—one of two subcommittees I’m proud to serve on. We have a unique opportunity to address the climate crisis, cut rising energy costs, invest in innovative and sustainable technologies, and more—but sadly, the bill House Republicans put forward did not rise to meet any of these challenges.

 The Year-Long Assault on Women's Rights 

One year ago tomorrow, the United States Supreme Court issued the disastrous Dobbs decision, overturning Roe v. Wade and eviscerating half a century of women's rights. 

The Dobbs decision has resulted in catastrophic consequences for women across America—with 20 states having banned or severely restricted abortion access over the past year. These bans have forced women to travel almost 100 miles to receive what should be essential healthcare services, suffer more heartbreak by carrying unviable pregnancies to term, and be left to languish from life-threatening illnesses caused by dangerous pregnancies. 

Sadly, this is just the beginning of an extreme Republican agenda to enact a national abortion ban—something we cannot allow to happen. That’s why I remain committed to passing the Women’s Health Protection Act and restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law.  

You can count on me to keep fighting until a woman’s reproductive healthcare decision is made by her and her alone.

 Celebrating Juneteenth 

Monday marked Juneteenth—representing the anniversary of the day the final slaves were freed in Texas following the Civil War. It serves as both an important acknowledgement of our nation’s shameful history and a reaffirmation of our commitment to achieving full equality, equity, and opportunity for Black Americans.  

Over the weekend, I joined members of our community to celebrate Juneteenth by honoring our diversity, reflecting on our history, and recommitting to carrying on the fight against racial injustice everywhere.
