Here’s what happened.

FIRST, POLITICO warned of the GOP’s plans for “ambitious gerrymandering” ahead of the 2024 election. To help make this strategy work, Alabama Republicans had asked the Supreme Court to gut the Voting Rights Act, which would have opened the door to manipulated maps that dilute the voting power of communities of color.

BUT THEN, thanks in part to the work of our affiliate, the SCOTUS instead reaffirmed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act! The Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan preserved a key tool for challenging unfair districts. This changes everything.

NOW, we have a critical opportunity to elect leaders who will fight for new, fair maps in key states across the country– but we need to act fast.

Over a dozen districts could be redrawn before the next election – more than enough to swing control of the House majority. That said, we’re already almost halfway through 2023, so we have no time to waste.
