Hi John,

And the award goes to… Corporate Greed!

Last night, the Apartment Association of Metro Denver gathered landlords and board members for cocktails, a banquet dinner, and an awards ceremony. They patted themselves on the back after a busy year of lining their pockets and blocking policy proposals that would have protected hundreds of thousands of Colorado renters from destabilizing rent hikes and displacement.

Renters were rightly outraged by this celebration, so they held their own awards show: The Slummys.

Together with United for a New Economy and the Colorado Homes For All Coalition, renters and allies hosted the anti-award show to spotlight the slumlords of the year and demand that the landlord lobby stop meddling in efforts to protect tenants from poor living conditions, excessive rent hikes, eviction and displacement.

ICYMI: Landlords in Colorado have been jacking up rents at ridiculous rates over the last few years. Rent in the Denver area alone has increased by 12% in the last year, and 88% over the last decade. And just a few weeks ago, corporate landlords squashed a law that could have stopped huge rent hikes across the state. Watch this short video explaining how corporate landlords are hiding behind industry groups and lobbyists in order to rig the rules in their favor and harm our communities.

Last night was not just about landlords and their profits. Tenant leaders were the true stars of the show and they shared their stories, the impact corporate greed has had on them, and vowed to fight for a Colorado that protects them and their families from unjust housing conditions.

We see what corporate landlords are up to across the country, and we’re standing with tenants and communities in Colorado and beyond. We hope you’ll fight alongside us.

In solidarity,

Christina Rosales
