In response to the pandemic, Democrats in Congress passed a child tax credit expansion that aimed to put extra money in families’ pockets during an unprecedented crisis. And in the process, we helped lift more than two million children out from the grips of poverty. Families could breathe a sigh of relief with extra support for food, housing, and health care.

This should not be a Republican or Democratic issue. I think we can all agree that our children should not live in poverty in this country. But despite our efforts to preserve the credit, it has yet to be renewed or made permanent by Congress. And so I’m working hard to make that happen.

Not only would our legislation bring back the child tax credit, it would also expand the earned income tax credit, ensuring that workers without children will also see much-needed tax relief.
