Dear John,

Today is our independence day.

Or, at least, that’s what we were told we’d be calling it seven years ago.

But I’ve checked the news a few times today and I can’t see much celebrating going on; no street parties, no red-white-and-blue-barbeques, and certainly no shiny new trade deal announcements to start the weekend on a high.

But it’s not fair to say Brexit’s failed to make the headlines recently - far from it. We now know, for example, that one in five Leave voters think they made the wrong choice <[link removed]>, and that every shred of evidence suggests that the country has changed its mind since 2016.

Stack that on top of everything we learned from our own nationwide polling last month <[link removed]> - that two in three voters think Brexit has created more problems than it solved, and that the majority of the country thinks we should be better aligned with both the EU and the standards and regulations it sets - and it’s really no wonder the party poppers are sat in the drawer collecting dust.

And what of the freshly earned opportunities to forge our own path and replace all that we lost, but now with 50% more patriotism? Well, it would seem most people haven’t heard about them:

Choosing to continue the Brexit fight all those years ago when some of your closest friends and colleagues have told you it’s lost is hard enough. Winning all the battles we’ve won since then has been even harder.

For those who once promised the world before June 23, 2016, reality has not panned out as expected. They have retreated into obscurity, either by force or by choice. UKIP is dead, Farage has sought refuge in a TV studio, and Boris, burdened by his own incompetence, has finally crumbled.

But we still remain.

Best wishes,

Naomi Smith
