You Can Help Open One of Panama's Only Migrant Shelters
Migrants transiting through Panama face extreme danger, and they are in urgent need of your support.
In February of this year, a bus crash tragically killed 40 migrants in Panama. The RFM-Panama team immediately sprang into action, converting a building into a space for the survivors and their families to heal. Currently, 8 survivors remain there with their families to recuperate, and 2 more are still in the hospital.
The RFM-Panama team is the only group of its kind in the country. They provide food and humanitarian aid to migrants, facilitate shelter and services for extremely vulnerable migrants, and advocate for humane policies. They also monitor human rights abuses and conditions throughout the country, including the deadly Darién gap.
The Panama team's newest project is to transform the temporary space, a dilapidated former orphanage in the department of Chiriquí, into a habitable migrant shelter. Here, near the border with Costa Rica, vulnerable migrants and families must sleep on the street as they raise enough money to feed themselves and continue their journey.
Our partners are stepping up to accompany migrants, but they need $15,000 to transform the old orphanage and increase its capacity to meet the urgent demand. We are coming to you, as one of our long-term supporters, in the hopes of making this dream a reality.
