Shelter Aid:

Huge thanks to all the volunteers who participated in our last Caravan of Love! We were able to visit Movimento Juventud 2000 and celebrate International Children’s Day🧒🏻👧🏽 We received so many donations from our Amazon wishlist as well as some shoes, hats and shirts from Undefeated . We had so much fun helping such a lovely shelter full of families and children. We can’t wait to visit again.

We want to shout out recurring volunteers Albana, Noah, and Jeff Dean for helping this Caravan extra smoothly, as well as Luis and the entire team from Psicologos Sin Fronteras for their unwavering assistance!

Stay tuned for the next Caravan of Love for the month of July, we will announce sign up links through social media and our news letter.

A sweet message from Psicologos Sin Fronteras, B.C.:

“Lidia and the children from HOPE Worldwide sends their thanks to Border Angels for the donations, there were a lot of smiles and they loved the support, they were able to paint some pictures on the canvases that were donated”

HOPE Worldwide is a community center that is located around our supported shelter Templo Embajadores de Jesus that helps families with problems of violence, abandoned children, single women with children, etc.

We support them through our Shelter Aid program and Psicologos also provides talks on mental health and psychological care on Thursdays and Fridays.

Thank you Mingei International Museum

Last week, we had the pleasure of working with the Mingei International Museum to present our works and programs in conjunction with the “25 Million Stitches: One Stitch, One Refugee” exhibition curated by Jennifer Kim Sohn. This exhibition hopes to bring awareness to the global refugee crisis as well as highlighting local organizations who do this important humanitarian work through various programming.

“In this exhibition, guest curator and fiber artist Jennifer Kim Sohn looks for a way to make the unfathomable figure of refugees around our world more tangible by marking a displaced person with panels of hand-sewn stitches.

Each panel is unique, some documenting personal narratives, others showing solidarity with the refugees. Kim Sohn and her passionate team of volunteers crowd-sourced 2,300 stitchers from all 50 states and 37 countries worldwide.”

You can catch this exhibit now through October 15th at the Mingei International Museum at Balboa Park, Plaza de Panama, 1439 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101.

We are so grateful for this opportunity and partnership. If your organization would like to collaborate with us email us at [email protected]

News Spotlight:

Asylum seekers at U.S. border now rejected at higher rates
Almost six weeks after Title 42 officially ended, new data show that the rate of rejection for asylum seekers is now significantly higher than it was during the five years before Title 42 went into effect.

From May 12, the first full day the Biden administration's new immigration policy went into place through June 13, 46% of single adult migrants managed to pass initial asylum screenings at the U.S. border, according to documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

In comparison, from 2014 to 2019, before the pandemic-era policy was put into place, 83% of asylum seekers had managed to pass the initial screening which permitted them to enter the U.S. and wait, sometimes for years, while their asylum cases worked their way through the court system.

Biden asylum ‘travel ban’ placing LGBTQ migrants in harm’s way, advocates say
Title 42 expulsions are no more, but policies such as the Biden administration’s online asylum applications and a so-called “travel ban” are putting LGBTQ migrants in harm’s way, according to U.S. and Latin American advocates.

That’s because online appointments take time and force the migrants to wait in countries where discrimination and violence based on gender orientation are palpable; likewise, forcing LGBTQ migrants to first apply for protection in those countries is wrong, a group of advocates assembled by the Welcome With Dignity campaign said Thursday on a Zoom call.

“Asylum is a lawful pathway to the United States. […] If you are fleeing persecution or torture and make it to American soil, you have a fundamental right to ask for asylum. The new Biden rule is illegal,” said Aaron Morris, executive director of Immigration Equality in New York City.
