Dear John,
This fiscal year, I marked 40 years with the American Lung Association, including the last 10 years as your National President and CEO. I couldn’t be prouder of the work we do every day to create a world free of lung disease.
I wanted to take this opportunity to write to you personally as the 2023 fiscal year draws to a close on June 30. As you know, hitting our fundraising goals is a critical
first step towards achieving our ambitious objectives for the next fiscal year. From funding our pioneering new Research Institute to searching for lung cancer cures,
from preventing teen vaping to combatting climate change-fueled air pollution, we have our sights set high.
That’s why I’m thrilled to let you know, John, that a generous partner has decided to match donations up
to $75,000 to support a world free of lung disease.
This is an important chance to DOUBLE your impact before our fiscal year deadline. So I’m asking: Will you donate to support the Lung Association’s mission and see your gift automatically matched?

At this pivotal moment in our history – lung disease is now the number one cause of death by disease in America – I wanted to share some thoughts directly with you. About where we are, what we’ve achieved and what we’re up against.
The last 12 months brought inspiring victories.
- We launched the Lung Association’s new Research Institute to accelerate high-impact lung disease research with deep capital investment.
- Our new Patient & Caregiver Network came online, providing education, support, and opportunities like clinical trials to tens of millions of Americans living with lung disease.
- We successfully advocated for the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, spurring hundreds of billions of dollars in clean energy and air commitments.
- We reached millions of people in our
all-hands-on-deck strategy to end the
youth vaping epidemic.
The next 12 months bring unique challenges and risks.
- Nationwide efforts to curb youth vaping will take on added urgency, as will our advocacy to end the sales of dangerous menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars in the United States.
- Worsening droughts and wildfires across the country are destroying air quality. Fighting for comprehensive climate change solutions is mission critical for lung health.
- We will continue to fund trailblazing, lifesaving research into lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), long COVID, rare lung diseases, and so much more.
John, I am as optimistic as I’ve ever been about what we can do together at the Lung Association. Right now until June 30, Protect Environmental is matching every donation, up to $75,000, so we can end this fiscal year strong and start the next on the right foot, to realize our vision of a world free of lung disease.
Please donate today to DOUBLE your impact.
Thank you for a great year – and onward to the next!
Sincerely,
National President & CEO,
American Lung Association
