Dear NRDC Action Fund Activist,
If you’re ever confused about why some members of Congress keep pushing fossil fuels, follow the money.
Case in point: the recent debt ceiling negotiations.
Republicans told us the debt had become such a crisis that our nation had to consider deep cuts to critical programs that provide childcare, housing, and food to struggling Americans.
But then when it came time to consider cuts to the massive taxpayer subsidies for the fossil fuel industry? Crickets….
And while both Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Big Oil, only one of them takes the top prize.
As we ramp up our campaign to stop Big Oil’s influence in Congress, we’re wondering if our supporters can answer correctly who receives the most support from the fossil fuel industry.
POP QUIZ: Which House Republican took more money from the fossil fuel industry this year?
|
Last year, fossil fuel companies raked in a record-breaking $219 BILLION in profit. That’s more than DOUBLE the prior year, and it fueled a new surge in oil and gas development at the expense of our climate.
It’s unconscionable that taxpayers continue to foot the bill for approximately $97 BILLION in subsidies for an industry that is generating obscene profits by sacrificing our planet in the process.
And yet, when President Biden proposed getting rid of just a few of these fossil fuel freebies, Republicans in Congress turned around and proposed getting rid of funding for food stamps, housing, and child care for Americans barely making ends meet.
It’s no wonder Big Oil spends such an enormous amount backing its allies in Congress. But do you know which member of the House Republican leadership team receives the most support from the oil and gas industry?

As we prepare to pull out every stop to end Big Oil’s influence in Congress, it’s important to know who stands to gain the most from destroyinig our climate to pad fossil fuel company wallets...
Thanks for your support as we ramp up our efforts.
