Former president Donald Trump will be in my district on Sunday.

To be honest, it worries me when former President Trump visits Michigan, especially in recent years. When he is here, he uses hateful rhetoric aimed at dividing us from each other. He has verbally attacked our Governor, my colleagues, and me. I don’t believe this is what Michigan or our country needs.

Now is a time for us to find ways to work together, not spread further hateful rhetoric or spread words that encourage us to view each other as enemies. I believe civility matters.

Trump's divisive rhetoric is dangerous. His inflammatory language, name-calling, and derogatory remarks foster an "us vs. them" mentality, leading to increased polarization and animosity while his words erode trust and credibility.

When leaders engage in divisive rhetoric without factual basis, it sows confusion and weakens the public's confidence in essential democratic systems. Words have consequences, and Trump’s words have escalated tensions and incited aggressive and violent behavior.

In 2016, I warned everyone that Trump would win the presidential race. No one believed me then. I am already feeling uneasy about the 2024 election, so I am laser-focused on making sure Michigan’s 6th District stands strong against Trump’s extremism.

The path to the White House will run through Michigan next year. It is going to be critical to turn out Democrats in MI-06 so we can defeat Trump and his enablers down the ballot.
