Dear SPUC supporter,
Later this week, I’ll be telling you more about SPUC’s campaign calling for the UK Government to end all funding to China, which is using its resources to coerce women into abortion.
China is the second largest economy in the world, and it pursues population control policies including forced abortion, sterilisation and infanticide.
SPUC’s groundbreaking campaign has already caused a ‘row’ in the Tory party – with several Conservative politicians joining those from other parties to support us.
This is a ‘no-brainer’.
We should not be sending £60 million of taxpayers' money to the world’s second-largest economy for ANYTHING – let alone when it is a brutal totalitarian regime, which uses forced abortion and sterilisation as tools of policy.
SPUC is the ONLY UK pro-life organisation able to mount campaigns which can immediately provoke such responses from Britain’s politicians.
In a totalitarian regime like China, there is no pro-life movement to speak out on behalf of unborn babies.
We must speak out on their behalf, and make their petition to the UK’s politicians, whose hands are already bloody with the killing of infants, here and overseas.
It’s clear that the Abortion Goliath would love to be able to shut us down, just like their Chinese counterparts can do to dissidents there.
They have made a good start by securing a ban on prayer and witness outside abortion clinics.
They would love the state to restrict us further.
But if SPUC is silenced, there is no one able to take our place on the front lines.
Why is that? What is it that marks SPUC out, in the fight for a world where abortion is unthinkable?

In the 1983 photograph above, you can see my predecessor, John Smeaton, with his predecessor Phyllis Bowman.
SPUC is the world’s first and Europe’s largest pro-life group. The Society was founded in 1966 to oppose the Bill legalising abortion.
Despite the fledgling SPUC’s best efforts, the Abortion Act was passed on 27 April 1967.
- Since then, more than 10 MILLION unborn children have been killed under the Act.
- In 2021 alone, there were 228,627 abortion deaths in England, Wales and Scotland (latest available statistics).
- That’s 626 defenceless, innocent little babies killed EVERY single day of the year.
Despite the best efforts of our opponents to ignore or discredit it, internationally respected research leaves no doubt that abortion harms women too. For instance:
- Suicide in women is around six times greater after abortion than after childbirth
- Women experience a 30% increased risk of depression and a 25% increased risk of anxiety following abortion.
I’m sure that hearing disturbing FACTS like these leave you feeling troubled, upset and (understandably) angry.
That’s a natural human reaction, if you care about justice – and our opponents know that.
This explains why the abortion machine is currently going to great lengths to ensure that the grisly TRUTH about abortion stays hidden from the British public.
The tool they are using to do this is – as I have already suggested – ‘censorship’.
Is it any surprise that these ‘fellow travellers’ are using the same tools as the totalitarian Chinese Communist Party?

Over the past year or so there have been THREE attempts in the UK Parliaments and Assemblies to silence the pro-life movement with draconian legislation.
I have to level with you.
Their attacks on the pro-life movement’s right to freedom of speech and assembly are currently proving extremely damaging.
I honestly don’t know how much longer groups like SPUC will be able to speak up publicly and defend unborn babies and protect their mothers.
Unborn children face growing dangers from an ever stronger and wealthier abortion lobby.
- That means defending unborn children is getting tougher – to say the least.
But if we can’t get our message through to our supporters, then our supporters cannot respond with the VITAL funds that SPUC needs to continue its work.
Add to this the incredible pressure of increased running costs, which have us looking down the barrel of a financial shotgun.
Honestly, there are some very difficult decisions ahead – unless we can raise enough funds from this essential summer email fundraiser campaign.
Abortion giants like Marie Stopes and IPPF don't have such difficulties.
They receive millions in government handouts, but SPUC doesn’t receive a penny from the UK Government, The National Lottery or other such funds.
That’s why your backing is more important than ever.
Will you help SPUC’s life-supporting work?

Crucial donations of £20 and £25 and £50 and £100 and £250 and £500 help SPUC to campaign for free speech rights, which protect pro-life students on UK university campuses as well as those offering pregnant women help at clinic vigils.

They also help us challenge powerful members of the UK abortion lobby like BPAS, the BMA, RCOG and Amnesty International and their deadly decriminalisation plans.
Larger gifts of £1,000 or £5,000, or £10,000 or more are also vital. They provide the financial clout to go even further and take legal action through the courts where appropriate.

Without your support, it’s impossible to go to court to help save thousands of babies – as SPUC did in Northern Ireland – by delaying the implementation of Westminster’s bloodthirsty abortion regime.
Thank you for standing by unborn babies and their mothers.
Yours in defence of life

PS – High inflation continues to push up SPUC’s running costs.
We know that the cost-of-living crisis is affecting many of our donors (especially those with families to support), and we are seeing a worrying drop in donations.
This places SPUC at a further financial disadvantage to Britain’s biggest abortion provider BPAS, which can depend on the Government to fund its sordid activities and to see them through these tough times.
Contribute today if you can, so the vital fight for our babies can continue.
