U.P. teacher appeals to celebrities for classroom funding and fights for pay equity

Local educator, Heather French, is not unlike a lot of teachers in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula; she's seeking funding from outside sources to supply her classroom because of inadequate education budget. There are over 1,400 classrooms in Michigan seeking funding through crowd sourcing sites like Donors Choose, but Ms. French takes an innovative approach, taking her plea to celebrities, Michigan-well-knowns, and sports teams to ask them to share her wish list.

Even with a social boost from Lou Diamond Phillips, French still spent over $2,000 on basic school supplies for her students last year. She reached out to me, and I wanted to tell her story...

French's admirable endeavor is a poignant reminder that federal education funding and teacher compensation is sorely lacking. If you believe in her cause like I do, help me fight for teachers like Ms. French in Congress. "We are fed the line that this profession is a 'calling,' and only the strong do it. But our heads and budgets are always the first on the political chopping blocks."
