Tennessee Republican lawmakers receive mail with 'white powder substance'

A Tennessee legislative office building in Nashville reopened Thursday after a temporary lockdown prompted by multiple Republican leaders receiving what House Speaker Cameron Sexton called “a white powder substance” in the mail.

Republican primary spending projected to approach or surpass $1 billion

The Republican presidential primary is getting crowded. With a former president and well-heeled politicians running, plus super PACs boosting them, it all points to what's likely going to be the most money ever spent to win the GOP nomination.
Early projections show it will likely cost close to or more than $1 billion, according to Open Secrets, which tracks campaign-finance spending. The final figure will depend on how long it takes for the nomination to be wrapped up.
"It's a lot of money to become a successful president in the end," said Sarah Bryner, research director at Open Secrets.

Mystery powder letters sent to Kansas Republicans, Trump, Supreme Court Justice Thomas

A series of threatening letters containing a mysterious white powder is raising concerns that Republican lawmakers in Kansas and across the nation who received them are being targeted by someone cryptically calling themselves "your secret despirer," according to authorities and recipients of the letters.
Since Friday, about 100 letters have been received by Kansas GOP lawmakers and Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, who is also a Republican, officials said.
The list of intended recipients of white powder letters is growing and expanding beyond Kansas, federal law enforcement sources told ABC News.
Similar letters containing a cryptic note and a “suspicious powdery substance” were addressed to former President Donald Trump, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and other high-profile individuals, though the U.S. Postal Inspection Service intercepted them before they were delivered, the sources said.
Postal inspectors have possession of the letters and have deemed them harmless, the sources said.
At this point, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service are monitoring the situation. Read more

The 2024 election is being portrayed as the potential rematch that voters don't want. A recent YouGov survey (May 27-31) showed only 25% of voters wanted Biden to run again, and only 31% of voters wanted Trump to run again. Among independents, the numbers were even lower, with 16% wanting Biden to run and 28% wanting Trump to run. The media may be portraying 2024 as a rerun of what we have seen before, but there is one reason it won't be the same as 2020 - the change in brand images of the two potential nominees.
