As abortion numbers published for Ireland and Britain this week, it's clear that politicians everywhere need to get serious about proactively tackling soaring abortion rates (http://)
The Department of Health yesterday released the total number of notifications received in 2022 of abortions carried out. This shows that there were at least 8,156 abortions last year in the Republic of Ireland – the highest number of notifications yet on record.

Last year, the Department of Health acknowledged there was a discrepancy with the 2021 figures, with the number of notifications (4,577) contrasting with the number of payments made to doctors for performing abortions (approximately 6,700). This was blamed on Covid-19 and the HSE cyber-attack. However, the same trend of babies being aborted without being notified to the Department of Health could well have occurred in 2022, as a parliamentary question reply to Deputy Carol Nolan showed there were 8,876 claims paid in 2022 to doctors. This may indicate the true abortion rate is closer to 9,000 in 2022.

Also yesterday, the abortion numbers for the first six months of 2022 for England and Wales were released by the Department of Health and Social Care. The number of abortions during that time was 123,219, which according to Right To Life UK ([link removed]) is an increase of 17,731 abortions (17%) on the same six months of 2021.

It's clear that pro-lifers in both jurisdictions must ask their politicians to take pro-active steps to help women in unplanned pregnancy, support positive alternatives to abortion and address the massive abortion rates.

Register for our Humanity Campaign – Engaging with your Politicians Workshop on Wednesday, 5th July at 7.30pm. (http://)
Thanks to all those who attended our Workshops on Monday and Tuesday of this week. We were very encouraged with the number of people who are actively engaged and interested in meeting their politicians with their concerns around the extreme recommendations contained in the recent Abortion Review Report and the recent Second Reading vote in favour of the People Before Profit Private Members Bill calling for more abortion.

Summer 2023 is a really important time for us to engage with our politicians and remind them that the referendum promises of ‘rare’ abortions must not be forgotten.

Please take a moment to get involved in this Humanity Campaign over the coming weeks by opting to join our workshop on 5th July. You can register instantly below.
Remember even the smallest effort will make a big difference.
Thank you!

Varadkar’s interesting remarks on abortion this week (http://)

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he would like to see a reduction in the number of abortions taking place in Ireland.

In an interview with The Irish Times earlier this week, the Taoiseach also said he was “sorry” the recently published report of the review of the abortion law (which recommends doing away with the three-day wait) didn’t “properly explore” why so many women attended their first abortion appointment but didn’t proceed with the abortion after the three-day reflection period.

Mr Varadkar’s comments are welcome on both counts but given his record on the issue in recent years, it should come as no surprise that pro-life supporters will not be convinced of his sincerity by words alone. He will need to follow through by engaging with pro-life representatives, instead of allowing the pro-abortion side to have sole and exclusive say with regard to public policy in this area, as is currently the case. The Taoiseach, after all, promised voters before the 2018 referendum that abortion would be "rare" in the event of repeal, yet there's been a devastating 120% increase in abortions since the law changed. For every seven babies born in Ireland today, one baby has his or her life ended through abortion.

The 1 in 3 voters who voted ‘No’ in the abortion referendum and the ‘Yes’ voters who are horrified at how the new law has unfolded, are entitled to be represented at the decision making table. The Taoiseach could take immediate steps to ensure this happens.
The Pro Life Campaign has worked tirelessly over the past two months, highlighting at every opportunity the serious shortcomings and ideological bent of the report of the three-year review. And the intervention of AontĂș leader Peadar TĂłibĂn at a recent meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee where he directly challenged the author of the report, marked a significant turning point in the debate. In the face-to-face exchange, barrister Marie O’Shea admitted that before recommending the scrapping of the three-day period of reflection, she never met with any of the nearly 4,000 women, who according to the HSE’s own figures, went for their first abortion consultation but didn’t proceed with having the abortion after the three-day wait.

Upon its release, the report of the three-year review was lauded in the media as an exhaustive and “evidence-based” examination of the abortion law. In the intervening weeks, that assessment has been shown to be totally ill-founded as it becomes more and more obvious that the report is driven by politics, not evidence.
The Taoiseach’s remarks earlier in the week may well be an acknowledgement that some senior members of government realise the report has a serious credibility problem and are circumspect about proposing any legislative changes based on its recommendations. As pro-life supporters, however, we need to stay alert and active and continue over the summer months to lobby our local Oireachtas representatives to impress upon them strongly not to give effect to any of the extreme recommendations contained in the report of the review.
Oireachtas Special Committee meets to discuss constitutional issues related to euthanasia (http://)
[link removed]

The Oireachtas special committee examining euthanasia and assisted dying met on Tuesday, 20th June, to hear testimony from experts on the legal and constitutional issues associated with the question of legalised euthanasia.

Before the committee hearing began, People Before Profit Gino Kenny TD, the proposer of the original ‘Dying With Dignity’ Bill, was elected vice-chairman of the committee. The chairman is pro-life independent TD Michael Healy-Rae.

Members of the Committee heard contributions from Dr. Conor Casey from the University of Surrey, Dr. Tom Hickey from Dublin City University and Dr. Andrea Mulligan from Trinity College Dublin.

There was some discussion on whether a referendum would be required to introduce legal assisted suicide in Ireland.

The committee will hear more submissions on the legal and constitutional aspects of the proposals until the Oireachtas recesses for summer, with sessions of the committee resuming when the parliament returns in September.
First Anniversary of the overturn of Roe v Wade celebrated (http://)

On 24 June 2022, the US Supreme Court made the momentous decision to overturn the wrongheaded 1973 Roe v Wade decision which found that there was a constitutional right to abortion in the US Constitution.

The 2022 Dobbs decision affirmed that there was no constitutional right to an abortion in the US, which has had the impact of empowering states to decide their own abortion laws.

A year on, several states have adopted firmly pro-life laws which have ended the provision of legal abortion. Elsewhere, heartbeat bills and other measures have greatly restricted abortion and helped to save lives. The US is now undergoing a serious debate over abortion which was largely theoretical prior to the overturn of Roe v Wade.

A new poll shows that 77% of Americans want limits on abortion. Meanwhile, just 15% want abortion to be “allowed throughout all nine months of pregnancy, without any restrictions”, which is increasingly the view espoused by leaders of the Democratic Party including President Joe Biden.

The overturning of Roe v Wade was widely welcomed at the time. It has helped to refine the nature of the abortion debate in the US, which has also generated renewed discussions globally.

Do you have pro-life material which could be historically relevant? (http://)
We are putting out a call for anyone in possession of any documents, photographs, correspondence, etc. relevant to the Irish pro-life movement throughout the decades. We are particularly keen to receive anything in your possession related to periods such as the 1983 referendum. A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources. We are asking for people to get in touch with the Pro Life Campaign (mailto:[email protected]) if they possess such material (no matter how old or dusty!) to ensure it is preserved now and not lost to the ages.
