We won’t sugarcoat it: All too frequently, we encounter racism and injustice in our political systems that remind us why it is so essential to build a more inclusive and representational government.
We don’t need to look any further than what happened in Tennessee earlier this year, when the Tennessee Three – three Democratic legislators, two Black men and one woman – galvanized a movement to curb gun violence in their state following a tragic mass shooting outside of Nashville.
Republicans fought back with anti-democratic tactics, eventually expelling the two Black lawmakers, and not the white lawmaker, from the Tennessee House of Representatives.
This systemic targeting – and silencing – of Black voices is still endemic to America. In Tennessee, the people fought back, and both Black legislators were reinstated. But across the country, young Black men and women are being silenced and hampered from full participation in our democracy.
While we recognize and fight to end these injustices in every level of government, at Run for Something, we also want to celebrate and recognize the victories of our Black candidates and the victories yet to come. Our candidates’ groundbreaking leadership and commitment to their communities move us closer toward a government that truly represents the people it is meant to serve.
- There’s Zaynab Mohamed who became one of the first three Black women to serve in the Minnesota State Senate – as well as the youngest ever.
- There’s Kyra Harris Bolden who became the first Black woman to serve on the Michigan Supreme Court.
- And out of the 690 candidates we endorsed in 2022, 50% were candidates of color.
We must keep up the fight against the – in many Republican-governed communities and states, growing – injustices that were born out of slavery and racism. Together, we can create a more equitable nation by electing young, diverse progressives to every electable seat.
So today, we’re asking you to spare a donation of $5 – or whatever you can chip in – to help make this future possible. We need your help to elect young, diverse progressives in every state.
Thank you,
Run for Something
