In 2023, Florida’s state government expanded its already homophobic “Don’t Say Gay” law with HB 1069, which requires educators to teach that sexuality is binary and unchangeable and forces educators to misgender their students. The law prevents students from experiencing their schools as safe spaces where they can be themselves.

In 2023, Tennessee legislators introduced SB 3/HB 9 — the infamous “Drag Ban” — outlawing performers and business owners from participating in or hosting drag shows in public or where they could be viewed by minors. Wade that we can not rely on the courts to uphold our rights indefinitely.

TEXAS
In 2023 alone, more than 30 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been proposed in the Texas legislature. This includes 13 bills that directly target transgender youth, such as SB 29 which sought to ban transgender youth from participating in sports. While these discriminatory bills are considered “dead” right now, they can be brought back in the next legislative session.
