As a Parent Ambassador, Trudy-Ann Logan Turbide from Waterville, Maine, has come across a long list of people in dire need of the Child Tax Credit. She's met families relying on tax credits for basic necessities like food. She's seen the hope and relief in the eyes of a father and his special needs son who only discovered their eligibility for the tax credit at the last moment.

These stories are more than just individual anecdotes; they represent the experiences of millions of American families who benefit from the Child Tax Credit. However, when the expanded credit under the American Rescue Plan ended in 2021, a disproportionate number of children from Black, Latino, and Native American backgrounds were left without full access to the credit.

The American Family Act aims to correct this injustice by renewing and expanding the Child Tax Credit, a move that could nearly halve child poverty rates. The proposed legislation increases the credit to $3,600 for children under six and $3,000 for children up to 17, while also making the credit fully refundable. This ensures that even the most financially vulnerable families can benefit, a significant step towards ensuring every American child has the resources they need to thrive.

The need for permanent, robust measures is clear. The temporary relief measures during the pandemic, such as mandated paid leave and substantial aid to childcare businesses, gave us a glimpse of what is possible when we prioritize the wellbeing of families. The American Family Act aims to build on this framework, providing opportunity, ensuring dignity, and reducing the financial stress that too many families face.
