Today's newsletter features an article by Aditi Vasan and colleagues analyzing a recent increase in children's Medicaid participation.

Children's Medicaid Enrollment Expansion

As featured in this month’s issue, Aditi Vasan and her colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania examine children’s Medicaid participation around the time of the enactment of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

The act, passed in 2020, "incentivized continuous coverage for Medicaid recipients by providing an enhanced federal match for state Medicaid spending that was contingent on providing continuous Medicaid coverage, without eligibility redetermination to all beneficiaries throughout the COVID-19 public health emergency."

Vasan and coauthors found that after adjustments, new continuous coverage states had a "4.62 percent relative increase in children’s Medicaid participation compared to states with previous eligibility policies."

For more insight into the paper’s methods and findings, visit HealthAffairs.org for a recording of the June Journal Club with Aditi Vasan and Health Affairs editor Ellen Bayer, available with a Health Affairs Insider membership.

Elevating Voices

During June, we're highlighting influential voices and organizations who have made an impact on LGBTQ+ health equity and policy.

In 2016, the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center opened its doors in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Serving the Greater Lehigh Valley, the center provides free programs and services to strengthen the LGBTQ+ community.

The center's biennial Pennsylvania LGBTQ Health Needs Assessment evaluates health disparities and barriers to care. Results are shared with leaders, providers, and policymakers to inform policies that help LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians.

According to Ashley Coleman, Executive Director, they have "also consulted with many other states and localities to help them develop their own surveys to collect data on LGBTQ+ health, including Iowa, Utah, Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia."
