John, earlier this month we celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan, which upheld Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and reaffirmed that map drawers cannot manipulate maps to dilute the voting power of communities of color.

AP:
Supreme Court voting rights ruling stuns minority voters, who hope it expands their representation

Because of the Court’s decision, Alabama will have to draw new, fair maps before the next election. As Attorney General Eric Holder said, “This is a victory for all Americans, and it is an important step toward equal voting power and representation for voters of color across the country.”

Still, our work is far from complete. The Huffington Post article went on to explain that “The shock ruling will start a domino effect, but how far the pieces tumble is up in the air.” That’s because while the ruling gives our movement the opportunity to advocate for new, fair districts across the country before the 2024 election, Republicans are going to be fighting tooth and nail to protect as many of their gerrymanders as possible.

So now, we have two options.

Option 1: We can do nothing. We can hope that the fair maps victories we’ve won will be enough to secure a level playing field in 2024. Meanwhile, Republicans will take our inaction as an opportunity to press their advantage in any way they can.

Option 2: We can seize this momentum and keep on fighting! We can resolve to do whatever it takes to elect leaders who will protect fair maps victories, prevent Republican gerrymandering, and propel fair redistricting. Together, we can make sure Democrats have their best shot at a fair fight in 2024.

We’re going to take Option 2 and keep on fighting, John. If you’re with us, then make a donation now to power our work:
