The Unity Kickball Game at the Lockridge Baseball Field was a great opportunity to promote peace, love and unity across Ward 8.

On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the RLYA Commitee joined the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the DC Department of General Services (DGS) for a construction kickoff meeting for the Anacostia Recreation Center at Ketcham. The meeting took place at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library. Due to low community participation, DPR plans to hold a virtual meeting to garner wider attendance.

This week the Council is humming in a post-budget, pre-recess buzz: various committees are holding hearings on legislation to be voted on by the Council (hopefully) in the fall. On Tuesday, June 20th, the Council held a legislative meeting and passed less than controversial measures to clarify matters concerning the medical cannibus industry, the ability of police to detain a person suspected of driving under the influence without a warrant, and the issuance of Washington Wizard and pride plates, among other technical amendments to the Code.
On Thursday, June 22, the Committee on housing is considering a measure to prohibit condimidum associations from banning child development homes; the Committee of the Whole is holding a hearing concerning the duties and staffing of nurses in schools; the Committee on Executive Administration and Labor is holding a round table on the Department of Employment Services; and the Committee on Business and Economic Development is holding a hearing on the implementation of the District’s new financial management system.
Next week, on Tuesday June 27, the Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on the Mayor’s proposed public safety measure, the Safer, Stronger DC, would increase penalties for certain crimes and enable youth to be detained if they were at risk of harm. Over seventy witnesses will testify and there is certain to be a robust debate on the best policy to reduce crime in the District.
The Council will be on recess from July 15 through September 15th; during recess legislative and committee meetings are not held. The last legislative meeting before recess is July 11th at 12 p.m.

The Ward 8 Health Met With Leaders & Advocates Impacting LGBTQIA Health.

Councilmember White's Constituent Services Team met with the Ward 8 Health Council and heard from Japer Bowles, Director of the Mayor's Office of LGBTQIA. Constituent Service Director, Monique Diop highlighted Councilmember White's Commission on LGBTQ and presented current updates.

DC Councilmember Trayon White used to do volunteer work at the complex before he was elected to the DC Council. On Monday, White said he was trying to organize men in the community to take on violence.
“This happened at the beginning of the summer. School just let out for some of the schools,” White said. “It’s not safe in DC. So, we’re going to ask people to keep their kids in until we create these safe environments," stated Councilmember White.
