Dear John,
Today ADL is releasing a first-of-its-kind report in partnership with the national LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD. The new report identifies

more than 350 acts of harassment, vandalism and assault motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremism from June 2022 to April 2023.

This report provides a sobering snapshot of the deluge of hatred and extremism that the LGBTQ+ community faces every single day. This hatred of the LGBTQ+ community is not isolated, and ADL understands the interconnected nature of extremism. Over a third of these incidents also involved antisemitic tropes and dozens also included racist tropes.

Anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremism incidents took place across 46 states and the District of Columbia
Roughly half of these incidents involved individuals associated with extremist groups. As GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis notes, “this new report makes abundantly clear that extremism is escalating against LGBTQ+ people. Targeting people for who they are, or their race or faith, is an attack on fundamental freedoms and the health and well-being of all.”
Our ADL Center on Extremism is scaling up a program to embed investigators from GLAAD and other partner organizations in our offices and on our teams, with the goal of better protecting vulnerable communities and responding decisively to threats.
These stark findings should serve as a wake-up call to lawmakers, civil society leaders and community leaders to speak out against this onslaught of hate.

ADL and GLAAD ask you to take a moment today to call on your lawmakers to protect LGBTQ+, faith-based and other targeted communities by increasing funding to help marginalized communities make their physical spaces — from community centers to synagogues — safer.
Thank you for joining ADL and our partners to Fight Hate for Good.
