John, The world has made more than 9 billion tons of plastic, and most of it -- roughly 7 billion tons -- has ended up piled in our landfills or littering our environment.1 Do we really need to be making so much wasteful plastic stuff? At PIRG, we don't think so -- and we know a better way forward. If you're sick of throwing away flimsy single-use plastic bags, frustrated at the piles of plastic packaging on grocery store shelves, or disgusted at the idea that burning plastic and releasing toxic fumes counts as "recycling," we need you with us, John. No single person can solve the plastic problem on their own. But that doesn't mean it's hopeless -- it just means that plastic producers and retailers need to be a part of the solution, too. For decades, major plastics producers have successfully maintained a status quo that lets them off the hook for dealing with the waste their products inevitably become. We're working to win producer responsibility legislation nationwide, which will make manufacturers financially responsible for the waste they create and for properly discarding their products at the end of their life cycles. There's a lot of plastic on store shelves, too, which makes it hard for anyone who wants to shop sustainably. Corporations like Walmart, Costco, and Amazon can make single-use plastic all but unavoidable. That's why we're also campaigning to get these and other big industry players to start doing their part to combat plastic waste. With decades of experience, PIRG knows how to make a real difference. Our network helped win Massachusetts' first-in-the-nation Bottle Bill in 1982 -- and we've carried that momentum for more than 30 years to make even more progress combating waste. Thanks in part to supporters like you, one-third of Americans now live in a state with a ban on at least one kind of wasteful single-use plastic.2 Together, we've sent tens of thousands of messages to retailers urging them to take plastic off their shelves. And four states have already passed producer responsibility laws since 2021. With your support, our next victory could be just around the corner. You make it all possible, John. Donate today. Thank you, Faye Park Your donation will power our dedicated staff of organizers, policy experts and attorneys who drive all of our campaigns in the public interest, from banning Roundup and moving us beyond plastic, to saving our antibiotics and being your consumer watchdog, to protecting our environment and our democracy. None of our work would be possible without the support of people just like you. |
