It’s been almost 365 days since the Supreme Court took away our constitutional right to abortion, denying millions the freedom to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. Since then, we’ve heard harrowing stories of patients who have almost lost their lives, and everyday people harassed and threatened with legal action because they helped a loved one obtain an abortion, making every single one of us uncertain about our own futures. This year has not been easy, and the chaos the Dobbs decision created continues to haunt us every single day.

Even before the decision was announced, the National Women’s Law Center knew we had to find new ways to support abortion access in this country. We immediately got to work organizing how to best serve the people who need help the most, with the goal of taking the fear and uncertainty out of accessing critical health care.

Today we are proud to launch a piece of our response to the Dobbs decision. The Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund is designed to help people pay for expenses related to legal consequences they are facing because they have sought an abortion or helped someone obtain an abortion or information about abortion care.

As states continue to pass abortion bans, shut down clinics nationwide, and prosecute patients, supporters, and health care providers, the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund will be here to meet the moment—we believe that people who needed abortion care or helped someone obtain it deserve legal representation, regardless of their ability to pay.
