Friend, it's pretty easy to spot a senator or representative, even in the busy halls of the Capitol building: Almost all of us wear a small, distinctive lapel pin, made just for members of Congress.

But my friend Sherrod Brown doesn't. Instead, he wears a pin of a small canary in a cage.

He was given that pin more than two decades ago by one of his constituents, a proud union steelworker. It's a nod to the canaries that coal miners carried to warn them of poisonous gasses before unions won the workplace protections that we count on today.

Sherrod wears that pin because it represents all of us. Without unions, we wouldn't have the five-day workweek, child labor laws, worker safety laws, overtime pay or so many of the other basic rights that give working families a shot at a decent life. But today, those unions are under attack – and it's up to us to defend them.

Please, will you split a donation between Sherrod and me so that we can continue to fight for workers' rights in the Senate? Experts are already warning that Sherrod's race will be one of the closest and most expensive in the nation. He needs folks like you to have his back.

Labor unions have the ability to expand and empower the middle class. They allow workers to negotiate for better wages and safer workplaces and the right to retire with dignity. But the gap between rich and poor continues to grow as many employers intimidate workers who attempt to organize.

This is deeply personal for me, friend. My dad was a teacher and union member, as was my mother, a nurse's aide who worked tirelessly to organize her workplace, not giving up the fight until everyone got a better deal and a raise. She taught me the value of standing up and fighting for your rights, no matter what's in your way.

That's why I'm proud to stand in solidarity with labor unions across this country, and Sherrod and I will continue to do everything in our power to strengthen them.

But we can only win meaningful change if we all stand together. So I'm asking you to split a donation between Sherrod's campaign and mine so that we can overcome the GOP's megadonors and defend our pro-worker Senate majority. Please will you make a gift now?
