When a loved one has a substance use disorder, family members often face a stressful, confusing and difficult experience. Few families impacted by addiction receive support services, even though research shows:
- Effective strategies for family intervention and support exist.
- When families are armed with information, strategies and support, they can significantly influence a loved one’s substance use.
Unfortunately, organizations that provide family support services often operate with limited resources, receiving little or no federal funding.
How you can help: Ask your members of Congress to support the Supporting Families Through Addiction Act, which would provide much needed support for these services by creating a $25 million grant program over five years to help nonprofit organizations provide support services to families of those with addiction. The additional resources would allow organizations to expand their service offerings and reach more people, hire and train additional staff and better monitor outcomes.
