With the anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling coming up, Mississippi is on our minds. And we have a chance to make a huge statement to support abortion rights around the country — and that starts with replacing Attorneys General like the one most responsible for the Dobbs decision.
Here’s some background: Mississippi AG Lynn Fitch is the architect of the Mississippi Dobbs case that ended federal abortion protections almost one year ago. She views ripping away the right to an abortion as a means to “empower women.” When Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban was struck down by a federal court, anti-abortion extremists and Fitch seized their moment and fought to bring the Dobbs case to a 6-3 conservative Supreme Court that ruled in Fitch’s favor. And here we are, one year later, with extremist GOP politicians in states across the country passing dangerous abortion bans that make abortions illegal so early on in a pregnancy that many patients don’t even know they’re pregnant.
Lynn Fitch has become the face of the far-right, anti-abortion movement — and she’s damn sure proud of it. As millions of women and patients across America lost the right to abortion access, Fitch tweeted, “This decision is a victory, not only for women and children, but for the Court itself.” Here’s a tip for Lynn Fitch — abortion bans endanger women and patients who would otherwise be free to make the best decisions about their own health care alongside their doctor.
