The Hastings Center's 2022 Annual Report

Hastings Center logo

It is my pleasure to share with you The Hastings Center’s 2022 Annual Report Advancing Health Equity ([link removed]) , which features some of our key projects and accomplishments last year.

I invite you to spend a few minutes reviewing the highlights of The Hastings Center’s scholarship and public engagement in 2022, focused on enhancing equity in bioethics while improving health and health care and working for the wise use of technology. The report reflects a sustained commitment to advancing bioethics as it relates to individual and collective challenges in health, science, and technology.

[link removed] celebrating many successes, we also mourned the death of Hastings Center co-founder Will Gaylin on December 30, 2022. He was an acclaimed psychiatrist, an eloquent communicator, a deep thinker, and a wonderful colleague and friend. We all will miss him.

This summer, we also find ourselves in a period of presidential transition—which is why this note is coming from me rather than The Hastings Center’s president as in the past. Just a couple weeks ago, we hosted a garden party at the Center to commemorate Mildred Solomon’s successful 11-year tenure as Hastings president, which drew to a close on June 2. It was wonderful to visit with friends old and new while enjoying beautiful views of the Hudson River, an apt conclusion to an impressive presidency.

In September, we will welcome Vardit Ravitsky from the University of Montreal as the next president of The Hastings Center. The Center’s scholars, staff, and my fellow board members look forward to working with Vardit to maintain Hastings’ exciting trajectory for years to come.

I hope you enjoy this report and, if so inclined, will forward it to others who may not yet know about The Hastings Center. If you value Hastings’ commitment to collaborative and inclusive responses to complex ethical issues in science, health, and technology, we welcome and appreciate your support ([link removed]) for our continued efforts. Bioethics is as important today as ever, and our success is fueled by supporters’ enduring interest and investment in our work.

With warm regards and much appreciation,

Bradford H. Gray, Ph.D.
Chair
Board of Directors
