This week, the Trump administration released its 2021 budget plan, which includes drastic cuts to critical programs that millions of Arizonans rely on. The plan proposes cuts for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, superfund site cleanup, student loan forgiveness, and more.

Here’s a breakdown of his proposed budget:

Cuts at least $700 billion from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Arizona’s state Medicaid program, AHCCCS, covers 3 in 5 Arizona nursing home residents and 2 in 5 kids. Medicaid is also a “significant funding source for the Indian health system, covering more than one-in-four patients.”
Cuts “$465 billion from Medicare providers.”
Cuts $170 billion from student loan forgiveness programs, part of 8% being cut from the Department of Education.
Cuts 9% from the Department of Health and Human Services, including from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
Cuts 13% from the Department of Interior’s budget. In Arizona, the Department of Interior “manage[s] and conserve[s] 12.2 million acres of public land and 17.5 million subsurface acres,” across the state.
Cuts $113 million from the Superfund hazardous waste cleanup program, part of a $2.4 billion proposed cut from the Environmental Protection Agency. There are over a dozen Superfund sites in Arizona, including six sites that are at risk of being made worse by wildfires and flooding stemming from the climate crisis.

Trump’s disastrous budget plan is just the latest reminder that we need to elect bold Democrats up and down the ballot who will fight to protect the programs that benefit Arizonans and our land.
