Hi John!
Last week, the EPP failed in their sad attempt to kill the Nature Restoration Law.
Some context: The Nature Restoration Law was proposed by the Commission as part of the European Green Deal. The law would set legally binding goals for the EU member states to protect and restore nature.
It will help to restore
- Europe’s nature and biodiversity,
- protect us from the impacts of droughts, floods and wildfires caused by climate change, and
- secure our food supply in Europe.
But Manfred Weber and his conservative EPP want to kill this important initiative! In their ideological fight against it, they don’t even shy away from using misinformation and seeking questionable alliances with far-right parties.
Fortunately, the EPP wasn’t successful so far: In a meeting of the leading European Parliament committee last week, they lost their vote against the law. In an intense three-hour nail-biter, the vote on the law resulted in an equal split of 44 votes in favour and 44 against the proposal.
The EPP is missing one vote to kill the law. The committee session will be resumed next week, and until then we need your support to save the Nature Restoration Law!
