New Campuses Partner with JMC to Engage Students in America's Founding Principles

This year, 17 colleges have joined our growing list of campus partners ([link removed]) to develop programs focused on our nation's founding documents and ideas.
Winter 2020 Highlights
Engaging events for students on topics ranging from free speech and constitutional principles to effective persuasion in politics

Middlebury College
The Alexander Hamilton Forum ([link removed]) hosted Nadine Strossen ([link removed]) on January 28. She spoke on free speech and censorship:
"Professor Strossen seeks to dispel misunderstandings plaguing our perennial debates about “hate speech vs. free speech,” showing that the First Amendment approach promotes free speech and democracy, equality, and societal harmony.
“Hate speech” censorship proponents stress the potential harms such speech might further: discrimination, violence, and psychic injuries. However, there has been little analysis of whether censorship effectively counters the feared injuries. Citing evidence from many countries, Strossen shows that the best way to resist hate and promote equality is not censorship, but rather vigorous “counterspeech” and activism."

Bellarmine University
The Constitution Symposium ([link removed]) held its major event for students on "Liberty and the Constitution" on February 8:
This symposium on the Constitution examines the history of the constitutional founding period, issues about constitutional interpretation, the meaning of constitutional theory, and the practice of constitutional institutions. Students were chosen to assist with the 2020 Constitution Symposium and to do an independent study course on Constitutional Studies. They will be researching the 2020 Constitution Symposium topic.
The symposium is inspired by a vision of citizenship that is both fully dedicated to the American constitutional order and engaged in deliberation about the meaning of American constitutionalism.

Clemson University
The Lyceum Program ([link removed]) hosted JMC faculty partner Mark Blitz ([link removed]) for a lecture on persuasion and the nature of politics on February 12:
Persuasion is important in any political regime that relies on compromise, diplomacy, and competitive elections. What makes it possible and effective? What are its limits? And, what does using it teach us about the place of reason in political life? The event included a lecture and Q&A.

Now Hiring: JMC Outreach Associate

Do you know someone on the job market with an interest in civic education? Put them in contact with us!
The Outreach Associate will assist JMC’s Director of Civic Education Outreach ([link removed]) with all aspects of JMC activities on behalf of high school educators. This is a new but growing initiative at JMC. The Associate will work with the Director to facilitate its expansion through a wide array of responsibilities including but not limited to: the development and execution of programming; evaluation of program outcomes; drafting of grant proposals and reports; and communications and marketing regarding the initiative.
