Across the country, Black and Brown people remain disproportionately
likely to be incarcerated by a criminal injustice system that is a remnant
of the slavery endured by their ancestors.

I just reintroduced the People’s Justice Guarantee because I know that
transforming our criminal injustice system is inextricably tied to
dismantling oppression and white supremacy in this country. Together, we
can create a legal system that is rooted in serving our communities — not
profiting from the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people.

The criminal injustice system isn’t “broken.” It is working exactly as it
was designed — to dehumanize and incarcerate Black and Brown folks. The
cruelty is the point. That is why it’s essential that we dismantle it and
build new systems that center the well-being of our communities.

The People’s Justice Guarantee lays out a new vision for criminal justice
that centers the voices of the people most impacted by injustice in
America. The People’s Justice Guarantee would:

Dramatically Reduce Jail and Prison Populations:
- End the death penalty,
- Decriminalize sex work,
- Legalize marijuana and overdose prevention sites,
- End solitary confinement,
- Allow transgender people to be housed in accordance with their gender
identity.

Eliminate Wealth-Based Discrimination and Corporate Profiteering:
- Prohibit private companies from profiting off incarceration and
immigrant detention, including the forced labor of incarcerated people,
which is a modern form of slavery.

Invest in Impacted Communities:
- Stop the transfer of military equipment to local police and refocus
resources to dramatically increase clearance (or solve) rates for the most
serious crimes – shootings, homicides, domestic and sexual violence. And
more.
