Last night was a big night for progressives in Virginia, John! Of the 10 Working Families Party endorsed candidates on the ballot, 8 won their primary elections!
The list of WFP winners includes:
-
Lashrecse Aird who took on the last anti-choice Democrat in the state Senate and defeated him by a more than 2-to-1 margin
-
Jennifer Carroll Foy who defeated an opponent backed by the state’s dirty energy monopoly
-
Buta Biberaj who retained her seat for Commonwealth's Attorney after facing a bipartisan barrage over her restorative justice policies
But our work is far from over. With only a slim majority in the state Senate standing in the way of an outright abortion ban in Virginia and a Republican trifecta in the state, it’s imperative that we keep this momentum going and win in November.
With newly drawn districts and corporations prepared to spend millions to defeat our movement, we need to hit the ground running today. Will you contribute $10 now to elect our primary winners in November and stop an abortion ban in Virginia?

Victories like last night don’t just happen by themselves. They are the result of hard work.
Together with our partners on the ground, we were able to knock on 32,000 doors, make 120,000 phone calls, send 1 million texts, deliver 200,000 mailers, and reach over 2 million voters with digital ads. And we wouldn’t be able to do this without the generous support from our members like you.
Now as we move into the General Election, we’ll have to kick our organizing into even higher gear. Because Virginia doesn’t have campaign donation limits, big corporations like Dominion Energy can spend millions to deliver a Republican trifecta to Governor Glenn Youngkin so he can give tax cuts to the rich and ban abortion.
This November will also be the first General Election since new districts were drawn — and previously safe districts are now in play. Both parties have a path to victory, and with every legislative seat up for election, it’s anyone's guess who will win control of the state legislature in Virginia this November.
Earlier this year, Democrats in the state Senate were able to narrowly defeat an abortion ban. And Governor Youngkin is dead set on trying again if he’s able to win a trifecta.
But after last night’s victories, we know we have momentum on our side. Will you contribute $10 now to help elect our primary winners in November and defend abortion rights in Virginia?
