Dear John,
The Trump Administration is at it again— putting polluters first while restricting community voices. Recently, the Council on Environmental Quality proposed rolling back the way our nation’s oldest and most established environmental law, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), is implemented.
NEPA’s core purpose is to protect thoughtful, informed and transparent decision-making around the environmental and health impacts of federal projects. Federal agencies looking to provide funding for a new highway or permit a pipeline must examine the impacts on climate, air and water quality, and nearby communities while ensuring the public’s voice is heard and considered in the process.
The Trump Administration’s proposed rollback of the NEPA process would exempt major infrastructure projects from environmental review, limit the alternatives that federal agencies must consider, and limit public input and court oversight. It is one of the broadest attacks on our environment, public health, and the right to public participation we have yet to see from the President.
