Solidarity is not a matter of sentiment but a fact, cold and impassive as the granite foundations of a skyscraper. If the basic elements, identity of interest, clarity of vision, honesty of intent, and oneness of purpose, or any of these is lacking, all sentimental pleas for solidarity, and all other efforts to achieve it will be barren of results.
-- Eugene Debs

Comrades,

By the measure that matters most, Bernie won ([link removed]) Iowa ([link removed]) . But we all watched slack-jawed as Pete Buttigieg claimed victory on a disputed ([link removed]) and arcane technicality ([link removed]) , and cable news gladly let him have it. When Pete got a post-Iowa bump in the polls, we started biting our fingernails — but thousands of Bernie volunteers canvassed, phonebanked, and donated, and in the end Bernie won New Hampshire.

That's right, Bernie won! Say it out loud. It's good practice: this won't be the last time.

Across the country, DSA has been working hard to get Bernie elected. But as a socialist organization, our goal isn't to simply put Bernie Sanders in the White House. It's also to expose people to explicitly socialist ideas, to raise the consciousness of the working class, and to build a democratic institution that will remain vibrant after the campaign is over, whatever the outcome.

Being involved with our DSA for Bernie campaign is a way to ensure both that Bernie wins California on Super Tuesday and that the socialist movement continues to grow in size and strength. We’re down to the wire: if you haven't yet, now's the time to come to a canvass or phonebank (see below for details). And if you're already involved in the DSA for Bernie campaign, be sure to come to one of our other events. Join us in building the socialist movement for the long haul.

------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, February 15 | 8 p.m.–midnight
Classic Cars West, 411 26th St, Oakland ♿️
Love. Sex. Socialism. All good stuff. Under a Bernie Sanders administration, there's more of all three to go around.

Why is Bernie for lovers? He's fighting for:

💊 Free, safe birth control, abortions, and gender affirmation surgery
💔 Universal mental health services to heal your trauma and heartache
💃 Working conditions that mean more free time to chill, dance, date, and love
🏡 Universal housing and rent control for you, your boo, and babies if you want 'em
🌍 A Green New Deal and an end to the forever wars, to protect lovers everywhere

The haters in power say this can’t be done. Let’s prove them wrong!

Join us for our Valentine’s Day dance party and fundrager — that’s right, a fundraiser and a rager! We’ll raffle off 🔥attractive prizes🔥 to raise the cash we need to take back the world for love. Invite your Valentine, your crush, your friends, and your union comrades — this one’s going to be big! And WEAR RED, in the name of love and revolution, to make the night extra festive!

** YESTERDAY'S MAN: THE CASE AGAINST JOE BIDEN
------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, February 17 | 7–9 p.m.
B4bel4b Gallery 184 10th St, Oakland ♿️
Join East Bay DSA and Jacobin magazine for a discussion on how the Democratic establishment triangulated themselves into defeat. Featuring Branko Marcetic and Meagan Day.

As Super Tuesday looms, join us for a timely discussion on the forgotten history of Joe Biden, one of the United States’ longest-serving politicians, and one of its least scrutinized.

Over nearly fifty years in politics, the man called “Middle-Class Joe” served as a key architect of the Democratic Party’s rightward turn, ushering in the end of the liberal New Deal order and assisting the political takeover of the radical right.

More about the speakers at the link below.

** SCREENING: THE FIRST RAINBOW COALITION
------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, February 20 | 6:30–9:30 p.m.
Tenderloin Museum, 398 Eddy St, San Francisco
America thinks they know about the Black Panthers. But just wait until they hear about the Rainbow Coalition.

The Rainbow Coalition was a broad coalition of diverse, freedom struggle organizations, from the Black Panthers and Young Lords to working class white groups like the Young Patriots. Standing in solidarity in their class struggle against economic and racial injustice, the group both challenged—and changed—the face of 1960s politics in Chicago, one of the most segregated cities in postwar America. Collectively confronting issues such as police brutality and substandard housing, the Rainbow Coalition is a little-known yet historically significant political group that paved the way for future generations of activists.

Told through rare archival footage and interviews with former Coalition members, filmmaker Ray Santisteban’s The First Rainbow Coalition took more than a decade to complete, and depicts the story of a powerful, multiracial movement and the enduring legacy it left behind. Although short-lived, it had an outsized impact: breaking down barriers between communities, the movement created a permanent shift in Chicago politics and an organizing model for upcoming activists and politicians across the nation.

On February 20, 2020, the Tenderloin Museum will host a limited screening of veteran filmmaker Ray Santisteban's documentary film, The First Rainbow Coalition, as well as a director panel with original Rainbow Coalition members. More info about the director and panelists at the RSVP link below!

A donation-based event, attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute funds to the Fred Hampton house in Chicago, which is facing foreclosure.

Proudly in partnership with DSA-SF's AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus, Left Eye Cinema, and City College of San Francisco's Labor and Community Studies Department.

** LABOR NOTES DANCE PARTY AND FUNDRAISER
------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, February 22 | 7 p.m.–midnight
Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave, Oakland ♿️
Dance, eat, drink, and meet local labor activists at the Bay Area Labor Notes Conference Fundraiser ([link removed]) and Dance Party at the Omni Commons in North Oakland on Saturday night, February 22, from 7 to midnight. Featuring local artist DJ Kream ([link removed]) from 8:30–11:30 p.m. All proceeds will help workers attend the international Labor Notes Conference this April in Chicago.

What is the Labor Notes Conference? It’s a unique gathering of thousands of rank-and-file union members, local leaders, and activists who are putting the movement back in the labor movement. It is an increasingly important space for labor activists to attend skill-building workshops and meet to share effective strategies that can win gains and amplify the voice of workers.

A small donation at the door of $5–$35 covers food, music, camaraderie, and stories about the Bay Area labor movement from local labor activists. Cash bar available, Venmo also accepted. Nobody turned away for lack of funds. All ages.

Your support will help to (re)build a fighting, democratic labor movement across the U.S. and around the world!

Labor Notes still needs volunteers for the event! Please sign up here to help ([link removed]) .

If you want to attend the Conference in April, but are worried about the costs, please apply for scholarship funds here ([link removed]) .

Accessibility: The Omni Commons ballroom is wheelchair-accessible via a lift and has wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and we provide child supervision and wireless microphones with runners. It is also accessible by BART (1/2 mile walk from MacArthur Station) and by AC Transit bus lines 18, 88, and 12. See more information on Omni accessibility here.

** RED STATE REVOLT READING GROUP
------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, March 9 | 7–9 p.m.
East Bay Community Space, 507 55th St, Oakland ♿️
The largest strike wave in the US in decades has been occurring for the last two years, and it is not over! Teachers and other public education workers have responded to austerity politics, poor working conditions, low pay, and the erosion of opportunity for their students with a newfound militancy. From West Virginia to Oakland and Los Angeles, this is a national phenomenon. What are its roots? Who are its leaders? What does it mean for the future of public education? For organized labor?

These are the topics explored by Eric Blanc's Red State Revolt: The Teachers' Strikes and Working Class Politics (Verso Press, 2019).

Come to the reading group launch on March 9 where we will:
* Hear Oakland teachers reflect on their experiences in the OEA strike of last spring
* See a presentation on the history of California education unionism from Fred Glass
* Organize ourselves into groups with a discussion leader for the next ten weeks

Who should join? Educators, labor activists, parents, Easy Bay DSA members, and anyone else interested in learning more about the power of working class solidarity. We will meet every other week for ten weeks (five sessions).

Red State Revolt is the second book chosen in a series of Labor Reading Groups sponsored by the East Bay DSA Labor Committee. Copies of the book will be available for a suggested donation at the March 9 event (NOTAFLOF).

To RSVP in advance, go here ([link removed]) . For more information, contact [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

The current, financialized form of capitalism is systematically consuming our capacities to sustain social bonds, like a tiger that eats its own tail. The result is a "crisis of care" that is every bit as serious and systemic as the current ecological crisis, with which it is, in any case, intertwined.
