ICYMI we launched a new open access journal yesterday, Health Affairs Scholar.

Children's Specialty Care

Ju-Chen Hu and coauthors note in their June article that while more than 25 percent of Medicaid-enrolled children had specialty health care needs as of 2018, these children still experience gaps in access to specialty services within Medicaid managed care plans.

Hu and coauthors dive into these plans, and explore the association between quantitative federally mandated network standards and access to specialty care among a sample of Medicaid-enrolled children, including children with special health care needs (CSHCN).

Ultimately, the researchers find "no evidence that adopting any new quantitative standards was associated with improvements in any use of specialty care or reducing unmet health care needs."

These results suggest that network adequacy standards may have inadvertently increased frustration among caregivers while accessing care for CSHCN.

Elevating Voices

During June, we're highlighting influential voices and organizations who have made an impact on LGBTQ+ health equity and policy.

In an October 2022 Forefront article, Carrie Henning-Smith and coauthors discuss access to care for rural LGBTQ+ populations.

They note that as LGBTQ+ rights and research continue to evolve, the health and well-being of rural LGBTQ+ individuals must not be left behind.
