CEP Event: Tackling The Multiplicity Of Security Challenges In Taliban-Run Afghanistan And Neighboring Countries – Terrorism, Organized Crimes, Human Rights, And Humanitarian Assistance
(New York, N.Y.) – The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) alongside the Permanent Missions of Afghanistan, Canada, and Spain as well as the Afghanistan Policy Lab of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) invite you to a United Nations side event on the multiplicity of security challenges in Taliban-run Afghanistan and neighboring countries.
Almost two years after the Taliban takeover, international, regional, and foreign actors have diverse views about terrorist threats and security risks emerging from the Taliban-run Afghanistan. Despite their shared high degree of concern, there is an absence of any internationally agreed-upon strategy or common agenda on how to deal with the Taliban de facto authorities while managing insecurity within and coming from Afghanistan.
This side event will address the challenges U.N. Member States face in implementing relevant Security Council resolutions and adopting operational security measures within the rule of law framework to preserve the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Afghan people in a manner that is consistent with the overall objective of promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan under the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and in line with obligations under international human rights law, refugee law, and humanitarian law.
This event will be both in-person and online via Microsoft Teams.
