Dear Activist,

Last weekend was the one year anniversary of the SCOTUS ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that has allowed Republican’s to move our nation backwards. Luckily in Massachusetts, we have a governor who will stand up for our rights to abortion and bodily autonomy.

But, we need everyone on board to make sure that the rest of the nation is safe as well. This toolkit contains a guide with resources, from the DNC, on language to help spread the word about the consequences of the court’s decision, how it has paved the way for Republicans to take away Americans’ reproductive rights as Democrats work to protect them, and what is at stake in the next election.

Please forward this email to your networks and don't hesitate to reach out to me directly at [email protected] about using the guidance below.

Sincerely,

Brie Bristol

Talking Points

  • In the year since conservative Supreme Court justices ignored decades of precedent and overturned Roe v. Wade, Republicans across the country have moved swiftly to restrict access to reproductive health care.
  • This decision and the consequences that have followed are the direct result of Republicans’ unrelenting, decades-long, radical war on health care and the right to choose.

  • The court’s decision paved the way for MAGA Republican governors and state legislatures to pass and enact extreme laws to outlaw abortion, threaten doctors with prison time, and put women’s lives at risk.
    • In some states, women and girls have already been forced to choose between carrying out medically risky pregnancies and fleeing their home states for the care they need.
  • Republican lawmakers are wildly out of step with the American people when it comes to abortion:
    • Nearly a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a new poll from NPR, PBS NewsHour, and Marist found that a majority of U.S. adults still say they oppose the justices’ decision.
    • A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that more Americans prefer the Democratic Party's approach to abortion policy than the Republican approach.
  • Despite the unpopularity of their position, every 2024 Republican presidential candidate is running on an extreme anti-choice record:
    • Donald Trump laid the groundwork for a national ban by appointing three of the right-wing Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe, and called for “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions.
    • Ron DeSantis signed extreme legislation that bans abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant.
    • Tim Scott cosponsored multiple abortion bans and vowed to sign “the most conservative” national abortion ban possible if elected.
    • Nikki Haley said she would support a national abortion ban after signing an abortion ban in SC that had no exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time.
    • Mike Pence called for banning abortion in every state and supports outlawing medication abortion.
    • Chris Christie backed a federal ban and worked with Susan B. Anthony List to coordinate efforts to restrict abortion in every state.
    • Doug Burgum signed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country as North Dakota governor, with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest after six weeks.
    • Asa Hutchinson signed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and supports a national ban.
    • Vivek Ramaswamy supports six-week abortion bans and called the one DeSantis signed “reasonable.”
  • As Republicans push to restrict abortion nationwide, Democratic governors, attorneys general, state legislators, and other leaders in many states are the last line of defense for Americans’ reproductive rights.
  • President Biden has called on Congress to codify Roe v. Wade, making it the law of the land and restoring rights women relied on for fifty years.
  • As the President said in his State of the Union address earlier this year, he and Vice President Harris are doing everything they can to protect access to reproductive health care and safeguard patient privacy amid ongoing Republican attacks.
  • And if Congress passes a national abortion ban, President Biden has promised to veto it.
  • The stakes for 2024 are extremely high: While Republicans are running on their anti-freedom agenda of taking away rights and dictating women’s private health care decisions, Democrats from state legislatures to the Oval Office are committed to making sure people have more rights, not fewer.

Ways to Take Action

  • Post on social media by recording a short video about how the SCOTUS ruling effected you. Post a direct-to-camera (selfie!) video on why female representation in politics matters, don’t forget to include hashtags like #DobbsDecision, #SCOTUS, and #RoeVWade
    • Use your phone to film yourself vertically from the chest up.

    • Record in a well lit room or in front of a window. If possible, try to find a neutral wall or background.

    • Make sure you’re in a quiet area and avoid sources of background noise like cars, parks, bodies of water, etc.

    • Record less than 30 seconds. Don’t be afraid to record multiple takes to get a clean video!

    • Post them on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, ask your friends to uplift these posts, and don’t hesitate to flag them for us by DMing @massdems.

  • After you film your selfie video, use the sample posts and creative assets below to keep spreading the word about the SCOTUS Dobbs anniversary online:

Every person deserves the right to make decisions about their own body. Access to safe and legal abortion is crucial for reproductive autonomy, bodily autonomy, and gender equality. Let's stand together against Republicans who threaten these rights.

One year after the Dobbs decision, the battle for reproductive rights still rages on. I refuse to accept a world where access to safe and legal abortion is stripped away. We must fight for the right to choose and protect bodily autonomy for all. We must elect Democrats to protect us.

The Dobbs anniversary serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect and expand reproductive healthcare for all. Republicans will continue to come for our rights on the ballot. We must use our voices to fight for our rights.
