#ELECCIONES2023 ()

Dear Subscriber,

InSight Crime is pleased to announce the launch of our new investigation, “Power, Impunity, and the 2023 Guatemala Elections ([link removed]) .”
[link removed]

Ahead of Guatemala’s presidential elections on June 25, InSight Crime presents an investigation analyzing the system of corruption and criminal connections behind the political power blocs that dominate Guatemalan politics heading into the polls.

These political parties have connections to deeply-entrenched corruption networks, which have their roots in Guatemala’s s civil war. Between them, they have virtually monopolized key ministries and state institutions that regulate the country’s political, economic, and judicial life, enriching themselves and their allies and securing near-total impunity in the process.

In this report, we provide a detailed analysis of the four most-prominent political blocs -- Vamos, the National Unity of Hope (UNE), Valor, and Cabal -- and explain how they have leveraged Guatemala’s judicial system to remove threats against them, including a one-time presidential frontrunner, Carlos Pineda.

Our team conducted 65 interviews with government officials, prosecutors, political analysts and more to map out the matrix of criminality and impunity that overshadows Guatemalan politics.
