Migrants in Panama Need Our Solidarity |
Quixote Center's newest initiative is the Panama Project. This past March, we visited our partners with Red Franciscana Para Migrantes (RFM) in Panama and were shocked by what we witnessed.
The Darién gap is a roadless rainforest on the border between Panama and Colombia, where many migrants are kidnapped, wounded or killed. For many migrants, this is the most dangerous part of their journey. When they emerge on the Panamanian side, they are either placed in overcrowded refugee camps or forced to walk for miles along mountainous highways. Individuals caught aiding migrants--from providing shelter to transportation--can face huge fines or imprisonment.
In response to these challenges, the Panama team mobilizes humanitarian aid and accompanies migrants on their journey. But as the number of people crossing through Panama continues to increase, their newest goal is to launch Panama's only nonprofit-run migrant shelter. |
