Want to be at the forefront of shaping the future of our money and banking system, John? The Treasury and the Bank of England are considering launching a digital pound, and are running a public consultation to get our views on how it should work. [1]

The Positive Money team is holding a webinar with renowned digital money expert Saule Omarova on Wednesday 28th June, 7pm BST.

This webinar will be a chance to learn about the digital pound, ask questions, and get some help answering the government’s online survey. So if you’d like to learn more and help shape the future of digital money, come along to our free webinar next Wednesday evening.

When you register, you’ll be invited to submit your questions to the panel.

A new digital pound will be an opportunity to transform our money and banking system so that it works for people and planet. We want to make sure the digital pound is free, secure and accessible to all, and we’re adamant that it should work alongside cash - not replace it. But, unless we make our voices heard, there’s a risk that the government will prioritise private banks and fintech companies over ordinary people when they design it.

In this webinar, we will discuss how sovereign digital money like the digital pound could help open up access to our payment system for everyone, as well as democratise control over financial flows and investment so that they serve communities and the real economy.

Right now, private companies like Visa and Mastercard extract high hidden fees from card payments - and people are being charged to withdraw their own money from cash machines. This shouldn’t happen. Money is something we all rely on, and greedy corporations shouldn’t be able to extort us to use an essential service we use everyday to get by. Nor should they be able to use our personal information for profit and put us at risk by undermining our privacy.

A digital pound could be our opportunity to build a reliable, publicly-owned payment system that works in the interest of people - not profit. With a digital pound, we could get democratic control over our financial system.

This webinar is a space for everyone to come along and find out more about the digital pound. We’ll hear from Saule Omarova, who’s a leading thinker and advocate for digital currency in the US. Then our Head of Policy, Simon Youel will talk through what’s happening in the UK, followed by an audience Q&A and a quick walk-through of how you can respond to the government’s online consultation survey (which closes on 30th June).

Please join us to help challenge the dominance of private corporations over the future of the digital pound and come along to our free webinar.

Thanks so much for your support,

Nicole, Rachel, Simon, and the entire Positive Money team
