Dear John,

For most children, summer is a time of light — longer days filled with bright sunshine, games in the park and relaxing with loved ones.

But, I’m reminded that too many children around the world are trapped in darkness right now. What should be a time of summer frolic is instead a season of suffering for too many —

unless we do all we can to send rescue.

For Malone*, the darkness started when he was in third grade in the Philippines. Malone’s mother had gone abroad for work, leaving him in the care of his elderly grandmother. While she was away, relatives whom Malone thought he could trust lured him into the world of online sexual exploitation of children.

For two years, these relatives would pick him up and bring him to their home, lock him in a room in front of a webcam with other children, and sell their acts for profit on the internet. To keep Malone quiet, they told him his family would be killed if he told anyone, so Malone lived for two years in unthinkable abuse.

Eventually the U.S. Embassy was alerted to the online sexual exploitation of children involving Malone and other boys and girls. Because of our dedicated supporters, IJM and local partners conducted a rescue operation that freed the children from the darkness.

Today, after years of restoration in a partner home for boys, Malone has graduated college with an Information Technology degree. He has not only become a brave survivor, but a fierce fighter working to help end the online sexual exploitation of children. Because of you, he is thriving in the light.

John, be the light for another child held in modern slavery this summer.

Give today to help send rescue and restoration to more children like Malone.

Until all are free.

Gratefully,

Sharon Cohn Wu
