Dear subscriber,
As part of the Safe at Home, Safe in Relationships initiative, Sonke Gender Justice is implementing a creative activism campaign on the impact of alcohol abuse on intimate partner violence. We are launching and inviting you to join us on this campaign. We have produced a video available on our YouTube channel and a blog series encompassing stories from partners including POWA, Xumana Sibambane and survivors of IPV on our website.
Evidence suggests that alcohol use increases the occurrence and severity of domestic violence. Alcohol-related harm manifests itself in men being three times more likely to commit intimate partner violence and increases women’s risk of experiencing gender-based violence by six times when alcohol is heavily consumed. As a result, we are advocating for effective legislation of alcohol and would like to raise awareness of the correlation between alcohol use and IPV to the wider community through this campaign.
You can join the conversation on our social media platforms by retweeting, commenting and sharing your thoughts on the topic using #WyzeUp #GBV #StopIntimatePartnerViolence
