Yesterday, scientists reported that the concentration of carbon dioxide
in the atmosphere has reached an all-time high of 416 parts per
million—up from 411 ppm in just one year. It's impossible to understate
how bad this news is. The maximum safe level of carbon dioxide to
prevent catastrophic climate change is 350 ppm. In fact, before 1950,
carbon dioxide levels never went over 305 ppm in the previous 800,000
years! But as Greta Thunberg said, "The saddest thing is that this won't
be breaking news." And Greta was right. The corporate media barely
noticed. But at Common Dreams, we always treat the climate emergency as
headline news. As a small donor-funded, nonprofit news outlet, we're
able to cover the news that matters, not just what gets clicks or what
